Full Frame Illustrated

Posted on April 3rd, 2010 by mohamed.

If you've ever wondered what the difference between a DSLR that is full frame and one that isn't, here is a nice illustrated example.

Joi and I were standing next to each other, using the same fixed 35mm lens (Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH). The only difference (apart from the fact that Joi is a better photographer!) was that I was shooting with a Leica M8.2 while he was using the newer Leica M9, a full frame camera.

Paintball
Leica M9 - full frame so actual 35mm

Easy targets

Leica M8.2 - not full frame which means the actual shot is 47 mm even though I was using a 35mm lens.

So basically a the M9 full frame camera captured the entire 35mm scene while the mine was slightly "zoomed" in.
